For round fire pits, the formula is: Diameter (A) x Diameter (A) x Rock Depth (B) / 24 = Lava Rock (lbs.). For rectangular fire pits, it's: Width (A) x Fireplace Depth (B) x Rock Depth (C) / 19 = Lava Rock (lbs.). For square fire pits, it's: Width (A) x Width (A) x Rock Depth (B) / 19 = Lava Rock (lbs.). For fireplaces, the formula is: (Front Width (A) + Back Width (B)) / 2 x Fireplace Depth (C) x Rock Depth (D) / 19 = Lava Rock (lbs.).

We recommend a minimum of 2 inches of lava rock depth for most installations, with 2 to 4 inches being suitable for fireplaces.
